Which format to choose
JPG is the most compatible format for photos and gives small files, but it does not support transparency. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which suits logos, screenshots, and graphics with text. WebP supports both transparency and strong compression, and works in every modern browser.
Converting a photo from PNG to JPG or WebP usually makes it much smaller. Converting a JPG to PNG makes the file bigger without improving quality, because detail lost in the original JPG cannot be recovered.
Transparency and colors
When a transparent PNG or WebP is converted to JPG, transparent areas become white, since JPG cannot store transparency. Keep PNG or WebP if the image sits on a colored background.
Animated GIF and WebP files are converted using their first frame only.
