About Percentage Calculator

Which calculation to use

Use "What is X% of Y" for tips, discounts, and tax: 15% of 80 is 12. Use "X is what % of Y" for shares and scores: 30 out of 150 is 20%.

Use percentage change when one value came before the other, such as last year's sales and this year's. Going from 80 to 120 is a 50% increase, but going from 120 back to 80 is a 33.3% decrease, because the change is measured from the starting value.

Change vs. difference

Percentage difference compares two values when neither is the starting point, such as two store prices. It divides the gap by the average of the two values, so swapping them gives the same answer: 50 and 75 differ by 40%.
