What BMI measures

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. The WHO categories for adults are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or more obesity.

The healthy weight range shown is the weight that would put you between 18.5 and 24.9 at your height.

Limits of BMI

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so muscular people can score as overweight. It also does not reflect where fat is carried, which matters for health. Some health bodies use lower thresholds for people of Asian descent.

BMI for children and teenagers uses age- and sex-specific charts, so this calculator is for adults only. It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis; talk to a doctor about your health.
