How stacked discounts work

A coupon applied after a sale discount is taken off the already-reduced price, not the original. 20% off and then an extra 10% off a $100 item gives $72, not $70, which is a total saving of 28%, not 30%.

Sales tax is calculated on the price after all discounts, which is how most US stores charge it.

Reading the breakdown

The breakdown shows each step: original price, discount, coupon, subtotal, and tax, so you can check a receipt line by line. The You pay total includes tax, and You save shows the combined value of the discount and coupon.

Sales tax rates vary by state and city. Use the rate on a recent receipt for the most accurate total.
