About Find & Replace

Find every occurrence of a word or phrase and replace it in one step. Turn on match case, whole words only, or regular expressions for precise edits. The result and the number of matches update as you type, and your original text is never overwritten.

Plain text, whole words, and case

In plain text mode the tool searches for exactly what you type, including punctuation. Whole words only stops a search for cat from matching inside category. Match case makes the search treat Cat and cat as different.

Leave the replacement empty to delete every match. The replacement is inserted literally in plain mode, so characters like $ and & appear exactly as typed.

Regular expressions

Turn on Regular expression to search with patterns. \d+ finds any number, \s+ finds runs of whitespace, and ^ and $ match the start and end of the text. Use parentheses to capture parts of a match and $1, $2 in the replacement to reuse them; for example, find (\w+)@(\w+) and replace with $2 at $1.

If a pattern is invalid, the tool shows the error instead of a result, so a typo in a pattern never silently changes your text.

Questions about Find & Replace

Does the search support regular expressions?
Yes. Enable Regex mode to run patterns with standard JavaScript flags.
How do I delete every match?
Leave the "Replace with" field empty. Every match is removed.
How do I put each comma-separated item on its own line?
Turn on Regular expression, find ,\s* and replace with \n. In regular expression mode, \n inserts a line break and \t inserts a tab.
What do $1 and $2 do?
In regular expression mode they insert the text captured by the first and second parentheses in your pattern. In plain text mode they are inserted literally.
Can I undo a replacement?
Your original text is never changed; the result appears in its own pane. Adjust the search and the result updates.
