Choosing a barcode type

CODE128 encodes letters, numbers, and symbols and is the best general choice for internal labels, shipping, and asset tags. CODE39 is older and supports uppercase letters and numbers, and is still used in some industries.

EAN-13 and UPC are for retail products sold in stores. They encode numbers only and include a check digit that scanners verify. To sell in most stores, the number itself must be registered with GS1; a generator can draw the barcode, but it cannot issue a valid product number.

Printing barcodes that scan

Keep dark bars on a light background with strong contrast; light bars on dark backgrounds often fail to scan. Leave the quiet zone, the blank margin on each side, because scanners need it to find where the code starts and ends.

Download SVG for print and labels, since it stays sharp at any size. PNG works for documents and websites.
